Abstract

543,433. Starch adhesives ; synthetic resins. ROHM & HAAS CO. Sept. 5, 1940, No. 13916. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group V] Starch pastes prepared by boiling with water, treating chemically, for example with alum, or hydrolysing with acids or enzymes, are stabilized by heating with water-soluble urea- or thiourea-formaldehyde compounds, particularly methylol or dimethylol urea. Up to one part of the compound to four parts of starch may be used. Specification 543,432 is referred to. The products may be used for sizing paper, fabrics &c. as adhesives, for laundry work, for stiffening fabrics &c. and may be mixed with catalysts such as ammonium thiocyanate, chloride or phosphate, formic or acetic acid &c. to harden the formaldehyde compound, or with borax.
