Abstract

Aqueous protein compositions containing potential hardening agents comprise an insoluble inorganic compound capable of reacting with an acid to form a protein hardening agent, a substance capable of forming acid by hydrolysis when the composition is subjected to heating and/or drying, and a volatile alkali in amount sufficient to prevent solution of the insoluble compound. The insoluble inorganic compound may be colloidal aluminium hydroxide, or an iron, zinc or lead compound, and may be produced by double decomposition in situ. Suitable acid-forming materials are salts, e.g. ammonium salts of fatty acids, readily hydrolyzable esters, e.g. alkyl formates, amides, e.g. formamide, and derivatives thereof, e.g. methylol formamide. The protein used may be glue, casein or soyabean protein, and fillers, dyes, plasticizers and formaldehyde may be added. The compositions may be used in the production of washable wallpaper, sized paper and fabrics, adhesives, paints, and plastic compositions.ALSO:Aqueous protein compositions containing potential hardening agents comprise an insoluble inorganic compound capable of reacting with an acid to form a protein hardening agent, a substance capable of forming acid by hydrolysis when the composition is subjected to heating and/or drying, and a volatile alkali in amount sufficient to prevent solution of the insoluble compound.
