Abstract
A composition for coating or printing paper &c. webs comprises clay or a pigment, mixed with a size consisting of a solution of casein, glue, or albumen. The size may be prepared by stirring 20 lbs. of dry casein into about 80 lbs. of water heated to about 50 DEG C. meanwhile adding a solution of borax, caustic soda, sodium carbonate, ammonia, or sodium phosphate. The coated surface is subsequently sprayed with a solution of formaldehyde or other substance capable of reacting with the protein to form a water-insoluble compound.
