Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of synthetic resins capable of coalescing with plasticisers at temperatures below 100 DEG C. are prepared by dispersing in water an amount of plasticiser sufficient to give a film-forming composition with the resin at such temperatures, forming a paste-like mixture of the dispersion, the solid disintegrated resin and a dispersing agent, and kneading the mixture at a temperature at which coalescence occurs until the resin is dispersed. Suitable dispersing agents are long chain carboxylic acids or sulphonic acids, sulphated long chain aliphatic alcohols or sulphated castor oil. Stabilisers such as casein, glue, sodium alginate, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and colloidal clay, e.g. bentonite, may be added, together with ammonia. The dispersing agent and stabiliser are preferably added to the water prior to dispersing the plasticiser and finally the resin is added. The temperature throughout is preferably kept constant. Dispersions of polyvinyl acetate with dibutyl phthalate are described.ALSO:Aqueous dispersions of synthetic resins capable of coalescing with plasticisers at temperatures below 100 DEG C. are prepared by dispersing in water an amount of plasticiser sufficient to give a film-forming composition with the resin at such temperatures, forming a paste-like mixture of the dispersion, the solid disintegrated resin and a dispersing agent, and kneading the mixture at a temperature at which coalescence occurs until the resin is dispersed. Suitable dispersing agents are longchain carboxylic acids or sulphonic acids, sulphated long-chain aliphatic alcohols or sulphonated castor oil. Stabilisers may also be added and include casein, glue, sodium alginate, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and colloidal clay, e.g. bentonite. Ammonia may also be added. The dispersing agent and stabiliser are preferably added to the water prior to dispersing the plasticiser and finally the resin is added. The temperature throughout is preferably kept constant. Dispersions of polyvinyl acetate with dibutyl phthalate are described.
