Abstract

Butyl rubber is dispersed in water by means of kaolin as the sole dispersing agent. The rubber and kaolin are mixed, with or without a little water, to form a coherent mass and water is added while continuing the mixing until the phase is inverted. The kaolin may be added in increments to the mixture. From 40 to 125 parts of kaolin may be used per 100 parts of butyl rubber. The average particle size is from 1 to 2 microns and the dispersions are neutral. The pH should be kept below 8 and may be reduced to as low as 2 by acids or acid salts, e.g. alum or aluminium sulphate. The dispersions may be compounded with conventional curing agents. Specified isoolefines for the butyl rubber are isobutylene, 2-methyl butene-1 and 2-ethyl butene-1 and specified diolefines are butadiene, isoprene, 2, 3-dimethyl butadiene and piperylene.
