Abstract

Finely divided preparations consisting mainly of calcium hydrate or calcium magnesium hydrate are prepared by hydrating the corresponding oxide with an aqueous solution of a sodium salt of a sulphonated higher fatty alcohol. Optionally other substances, inactive or weakly reactive to calcium oxide such as sulphur, silicon compounds, china clay, pigments, rosins or waxes, may be added at any stage of hydration. According to examples: (i) calcium oxide admixed with sulphur is hydrated with a 5 per cent aqueous solution of sodium salts of higher secondary alkyl sulphates, such solution being known under the Registered Trade Mark "Teepol". The sulphur may be wholly or partly replaced by D.D.T. hexachlorocyclohexane or naphthalene; (ii) calcium oxide is hydrated with an aqueous solution of sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonates known under the Registered Trade Mark "Alkanol H.G." in which has been emulsified ethyl silicate. China clay, or titanium oxide may be employed as the additive substance to produce white pigments for distempers and paint.ALSO:A reinforcing and filling material for rubber comprises sulphur or ethyl silicate incorporated at any stage in the hydration of calcium or calcium magnesium oxide with an aqueous solution of a sodium salt of a sulphonated higher fatty alcohol. According to example (a) 95 parts of powder calcium oxide are intimately mixed with 5 parts of flowers of sulphur and the mixture hydrated with 35 parts of water containing 5 per cent of sodium higher secondary alkyl sulphates, and (b) 100 parts of freshly burnt quicklime are hydrated with 40 parts of water containing in solution 2 per cent of sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate in which has been emulsified 10 parts of ethyl silicate.ALSO:Insecticidal or fungicidal compounds are incorporated at any stage in the hydration of calcium oxide or calcium magnesium oxide with an aqueous solution of a sodium salt of a sulphonated higher fatty alcohol. According to examples calcium oxide, preferably freshly burnt is mixed with sulphur, D.D.T., hexachlorocylohexane or naphthalene and hydrated with a 5 per cent aqueous solution of the sodium salts of higher secondary alkyl sulphates known under the Registered Trade Mark "Teepol." The resulting finely divided powder can be dispersed in water and applied as a powder, spray or as a soil fumigant.
