Abstract
A metaphosphate or a polymetaphosphate is used as a stabilizing agent when latex is brought into contact with asbestos. The asbestos may be subdivided or in the form of a manufactured product such as fabric. Other stabilizing agents, fillers and vulcanizing ingredients may be present. In examples the asbestos in the form of an aqueous sludge is mixed with concentrated latex, sodium metaphosphate being present in either or both the sludge or latex. Coagulants, such as aluminium sulphate, alum, calcium chloride, or dilute acids may then be added to the mass.
