Abstract

Fire-resistant rubber goods are made by employing natural or artificial dispersions of rubber (or concentrated latices as obtained in Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70]), containing highly chlorinated oils, fats, waxes, or hydrocarbons, in amounts of 30 to 100 per cent of the rubber content. The compounded dispersion may be prepared by emulsifying the chlorinated compound in water with the aid of a soap, and adding to a latex mix; or by dissolving it in benzene, emulsifying in dilute casein solution, evaporating off the benzene by heat, allowing to settle, washing, and adding the paste to a latex mix; or by dissolving chlorinated rubber or polymerized chlorobutadiene in the chlorinated compound, forming an emulsion therefrom with the aid of casein, oleic acid and ammonia, and incorporating it in a latex mix; or by allowing rubber sheet to absorb the chlorinated organic compound and then emulsifying. Chlorinated naphthalene, chlorinated diphenyl, trichlorobene, &c. may be employed. The dispersions may be employed to produce cellular rubber goods of the kind described in Specifications 332,525 and 332,526, [both in Class 70], and the fire-resistant properties of the goods may be enhanced by rubbing selenium powder into the surface or by incorporation of easily-decomposable carbonates.
