Abstract

Into butyl rubber, prepared by polymerization of a mixture of a major proportion of an isoolefine exemplified by isobutylene, 2-methyl butene-1, 2-ethyl butene-1 and a minor proportion of a conjugated diene exemplified by butadiene-1,3,isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene-1,3, piperylene, is mixed a non-colloidal filler exemplified by kaolin or whiting, and the mixture so formed is dispersed in water by means of an ammonium soap of a fatty acid having 10-20 carbon atoms.ALSO:Into butyl rubber is mixed a non-colloidal filler and the mixture is dispersed in water by means of an ammonium soap of a fatty acid having 10-20 carbon atoms, e.g. capric, undecanoic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, margaric, stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidic acids and the acids which occur with rosin acids in tall-oil acids. For 100 parts of butyl rubber there may be 25-100 parts of the filler and 3-15 parts of the soap. Examples are concerned with making dispersions of 50 per cent total solids by working (i) kaolin powder and stearic acid and (ii) whiting and oleic acid into a band of butyl rubber on a rubber mill, transferring the mixture to an internal mixer, and there incorporating, at 35-40 DEG C., water and aqueous ammonia.
