Abstract

In making abrasive-coated fabric or paper, the abrasive grains are secured to the backing by means of an adhesive comprising an aqueous alkaline solution of a resin. The resins may be natural resins such as copal or synthetic resins such as phenolic condensation products, urea-formaldehyde resins or alkyd resins. Neutral or alkaline aqueous solutions of glue, casein, drying oils, gums or starches may be added. Alkyd resins may be solubilized by ammonia, borax or triethanolamine. In examples, glycerol-phthalic anhydride resins modified or not with glycol, succinic acid or adipic acid, dissolved in aqueous ammonia, or a mixed ester of glycerol phthalate and glycol succinate dissolved in aqueous ammonia containing glue are used. The artificial resin may be used also for the sizing coating.ALSO:In making abrasive-coated fabric or paper, the abrasive grains are secured to the backing by means of an adhesive comprising an aqueous alkaline solution of a resin. Neutral or alkaline aqueous solutions of glue, casein, drying oils, gums or starches may be added. Alkyd resins may be solubilized by ammonia, borax or triethanolamine. In examples, glycerol-phthalic anhydride resins modified or not with glycol, succinic acid or adipic acid dissolved in aqueous ammonia or a mixed ester of glycerol phthalate and glycol succinate dissolved in aqueous ammonia containing glue are used. The artificial resins may be hardened by heating at about 300 DEG F. The adhesive may be used also for the sizing coating.
