Abstract
Shellac-like products are obtained by combining copal resins such as manila and kauri copals with polyoxy-fatty acids under the action of heat. Suitable acids are trioxy-stearic acid, satwic (tetrahydroxy-stearic) acid, dioxy-stearic and palmitinic acids. The powdered copals may be mixed with the acids in the dry state and the mixture heated. Alternatively, the copals may be dissolved in alkali solution and the soap solution formed mixed, after filtering if necessary, with an alkaline solution of the oxy-fatty acids. The mixture is precipitated with an acid such as hydrochloric acid, and the precipitate is heated, for example at 140-160 DEG C. The products are soluble in alcohol, borax solutions, &c., and may be used to form varnishes, or mixed with artificial or natural resins such as shellac. The products harden under the action of heat and may be used for insulating and impregnating purposes, for binders for plastic masses such as gramophone records &c.
