Abstract

In the manufacture of laminated sound records having a paper, fabric, or other fibrous core, the core is waterproofed by impregnating it with a resin soap and then precipitating the resin on the fibres by immersion in an acid bath. Any saponifiable resin, such as common rosin, shellac, acaroid resin, copal or kauri gum, may be used. Small quantities of agents such as stearic acid may be added to the resins before saponification, to prevent stickiness and to increase the water-resisting property. A resin soap solution may be prepared by adding rosin to boiling sodium hydroxide, excess of alkali being partly neutralized by hydrochloric acid. Sheets or discs of paper, linen, &c., are soaked in the soap solution, and after being squeezed between rollers they are immersed in dilute acid preferably hydrochloric acid. The sheets are then washed and dried. They may, if desired, be pressed under heat, before being used for making record blanks by applying to the core a material such as cellulose acetate or celluloid in disc or powdered form.
