Abstract

326,765. Thornton. J. E. Dec. 14, 1928. Compound sheet materials.-Gramophone records are made of preformed sheets of regenerated cellulose, produced by precipitating the cellulose from viscose, i.e. a solution of cellulose xanthate, the sound-grooves being impressed in the usual manner, in one or both faces of the cellulose, preferably by using heated dies. When two or more sheets are used, they are cemented together before the grooves are impressed. Fillers such as barytes, pigments, or substances such as gums or resins may be incorporated with the cellulose. The material may be chemically hardened-superficially or throughout its mass by treatment with an agent such as formalin or alum. Flexing agents such as oils, glycerine, or sugars, may also be used. A multi-layer disc may be formed with the two outer sheets slightly larger than the interior, the two overhanging portions being turned over and cemented together to form a rounded edge.
