Abstract

523,185. Paper containing artificial resins; urea-formaldehyde polymers. BROWN CO. Jan. 28, 1939, No. 2992. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1938. [Class 96] [Also in Group IV] Paper, which may be absorbent, for towels, handkerchiefs &c. or may be waxed for wrapping foodstuffs &c. is given wet-strength by incorporating into the paper-making pulp # to 10 per cent of heat-polymerizable resins or resinforming substances e.g. urea-formaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde, acrylate polymers, or polyvinyl esters, added as solutions, suspensions, or emulsions, in water, or organic liquids, and exposing the resin-containing sheet to a temperature of 450 to 550‹F. for 1 second or to a lower temperature e.g. 150 to 300‹F. for 5 minutes to 24 hours, to complete the polymerization of the resin. The finished sheet may then be rehumidified by spraying. In an example 1¢ per cent. of intermediate stage urea-formaldehyde polymer and 1 per cent. resin soap are added at the beater to bleached kraft pulp and paper made therefrom passed through paraffin wax at. 230‹F. The waterproofing bath may be at a temperature sufficient to polymerize the resin. An intermediate-stage urea formaldehyde polymer may be prepared by cooking 100 parts of urea with 120 of formaldehyde in 203 'of water and 27 or 28 per cent. ammonia water at 190 to 200‹F. until the viscosity has increased substantially and is rising rapidly. Specification 502,425 is referred to.
