Abstract

Pigmented prints, impregnations and coatings on fibrous materials are produced by treating the materials with a composition comprising polyglyceryl monomethacrylate, a water-soluble initial condensation product capable of hardening by further condensation to a water-insoluble resin and a pigment, in the presence of an acidic catalyst to assist such further condensation. Condensation products specified are those of formaldehyde with urea, alkylated urea, thiourea, melamine and guanidine and the water-soluble alkyl ethers of such products. The acid catalyst may be in the form of an acid-liberating substance such as ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium nitrate or ammonium thiocyanate. The compositions are conveniently prepared in the form of pastes or dispersions which contain pigments, such as copper phthalocyanine, and optionally thickeners, e.g. an aqueous emulsion of petroleum hydrocarbons, and vinyl polymers and copolymers. The compositions are applied to fibrous materials, e.g. viscose staple fibre fabric, and fixed by drying and heating at 120-150 DEG C. Specifications 648,959 and 695,633, [both in Group IV (a)], are referred to.ALSO:Compositions for pigmenting fibrous materials comprise polyglyceryl monomethacrylate, a water-soluble initial condensation product capable of hardening by further condensation to a water-insoluble resin, an acidic catalyst to assist such further condensation and a pigment. Condensation products specified are those of formaldehyde with urea, e.g. dimethylol urea, alkylated urea, thiourea, melamine and guanidine and the water-soluble alkyl ethers of such products. The acid catalyst may be in the form of an acid liberating substance such as ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium nitrate and ammonium thiocyanate. The compositions are conveniently prepared in the form of pastes or dispersions which contain pigments, such as copper phthalocyanine and optionally vinyl polymers and copolymers and thickeners, e.g. an aqueous emulsion of petroleum hydrocarbons. The compositions are applied to textile materials and fixed thereon by heating at a temperature of between 120 DEG and 150 DEG C. Specifications 648,959 and 695,633 are referred to.
