Abstract

1,160,446. Grafting cellulosic material. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP. 1 Sept., 1966 [17 Sept., 1965], No. 39033/66. Heading C3G. Cellulosic material having a permanent configuration is produced by a process comprising subjecting to the influence of irradiation a cellulosic material impregnated with a compound containing at least one primary group capable of polymerizing under the influence of irradiation and at least one secondary group capable of reacting to join the compound to cellulose through a linkage other than a carboncarbon linkage, and thereby polymerizing the compound and linking it to cellulose through a carbon-carbon linkage, arranging the cellulosic material in a desired configuration and causing the secondary group or groups to react to link the compound to cellulose through a linkage other than a carbon-carbon linkage while the material is in the desired configuration. The secondary group may be a group which reacts with a hydroxyl group of cellulose or one which is reacted with an aldehyde to form a methylol group, which reacts with a hydroxyl group of cellulose. A second compound, e.g. hydroxyalkyl cellulose or carboxylated alkyl cellulose may be incorporated during or after treatment with the first compound, for reaction with other secondary groups present in said first compound. The cellulosic material, which may be fibres, yarns, threads or fabric of any form of cellulose, including regenerated cellulose, alone or together with synthetic material such as polyester, polyamide, acrylic fibres, polyethylene or polypropylene or with keratin fibres, is subjected to irradiation prior to or after impregnation with the compound. A catalyst for reaction of the secondary groups, e.g. MgCl 2 or Zn(NO 3 ) 2 may be applied together with the compound, as may be a conventional textile cross-linking agent, e.g. an amino resin, an acrolein-urea-formaldehyde resin, a cyclic ethylene urea-formaldehyde resin or triazone resin. In the examples, fabric selected from dyed and undyed polyethylene terephthalatecotton poplin, cotton twill and cotton broadcloth is impregnated with an aqueous solution of N - methylolacrylamide, N,N - dimethylolacrylamide, N - methylol allyl carbamate or the reaction product of acrylamide, formaldehyde and ethyl triazone (2: 4: 1 molar ratio) prior to being irradiated and pressed. In Example VIII, polyethylene terephthalatecotton poplin fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution of acrylamide, irradiated, immersed in aqueous formaldehyde, treated with MgCl 2 solution and pressed. Cotton broadcloth is impregnated in Example XIV with an aqueous solution of N-methylolacrylamide, irradiated, impregnated with an aqueous solution of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and Zn(NO 3 ) 2 , dried and cured; alternatively the said cellulose derivative is applied together with the N-methylolacrylamide. In Example VI, polyethylene terephthalate-cotton poplin fabric is irradiated, impregnated with an aqueous N - methylolacrylamide solution containing MgCl 2 , and heated prior to pressing. The material treated in Example I is formed into stacks before being pressed.
