Abstract

1424698 Coated fibres/fabrics INTERCOOPERATION KERESKEDELEMFEJLESTTESI RT 10 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 17076/ 73 Heading B2E [Also in Division Dl] A layered finish on the fibres of cellulosic textile fabrics is produced by saturating the fabric or fibres from which it is to be made with a water soluble cross-linkable synthetic resin monomer and/or oligomer and a crosslinking catalyst so that some of the monomer and/or oligomer and catalyst diffuse into the fibres, washing the monomer and/or oligomer and catalyst from the surface of the fibres by means of an aqueous sol of a colloidal surface active substance which forms a resilient film on the fibres without diffusing into them, and fixing the monomer and/or oligomer diffused into the fibres by crosslinking and drying. Preferred monomers and/ or oligomers are dimethylol-methylene carbamide, dimethylol-dihydroxy-ethylene carbamide, trimethylol-melamine, hydroxy-ethyl-thiazone, hexamethylol-melamine, dimethylol-carbamide. The cross-linking catalyst may be selected from: MgCl 2 , ZnCl 2 , (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , Zn(NO 3 ) 2 and ammonium tartrate. The colloidal material is preferably a protein derivative cross-linked to colloidal size with aldehydes, carboxy-methyl-cellulose, cellulose ethers or starch ethers, partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol, methylol melamine-based acid colloid, or aqueous polyurethane dispersion. Preferably a further layer is applied to the uppermost layer of the colloidal material by treating the latter, before fixing, with an aqueous solution of compounds suitable for making a covalent bond with the colloidal material, e.g. N-stearyl-acrylamide, stearylmethyl-pyridine-ether, N-stearyl-methylamide, methylene-pyridine-chloride. The colloidal material may be used as a solution which also contains cross-linkable monomer and/or oligomer and a catalyst in concentration 50- 200% of the concentrations used in the first impregnating solution. The impregnation with the monomer and/or oligomer and the catalyst and the application of the colloidal material is preferably performed with a padder. The material to be treated may be cotton or bast fibre fabric, hemp, china glass or mixtures thereof with regenerated cellulose, a fabric of cotton mixed with polyester, regenerated cellulose-based or linen fabric. In a typical example cotton fabric was impregnated with a solution of dimethylol-ethylene-carbamide and magnesium chloride by a padder and without intermediate drying the treated cotton fabric was padded with a gelatin solution pre-treated with formaldehyde. After the padding treatment the cotton fabric is dried on a tentering frame and condensed.
