Abstract

1,144,604. Altering permanently set cellulosic garments. J. P. STEVENS & CO. Inc. 29 April, 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 18851/66. Heading D1P. The configuration of a cellulosic fibre containing garment permanently set by chemical reaction carried out between the cellulose fibres and a cross-linking agent or resin precondensate in the presence of acidic catalyst, and containing at least one permanent fold is reset by arranging the garment in which a new configuration including a change in position or direction of the fold either before or after arranging it in the new configuration, applying to the area of new configuration a solution of an acidic catalyst which is water-soluble non-volatile organic acid containing a free hydroxy group or a mixture thereof with a metal salt of an inorganic acid, and pressing and simultaneously or subsequently heating the arranged garment to reset the new configuration including the fold. The garment may have been permanently set by chemical reaction carried out between the cellulose and as crosslinking agent or resin precondensate, urea-foraldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, methylol derivatives of cyclic ethylene urea, dimethylol derivatives of substituted ureas and triazones, dimethylol carbamates or dimethylol imidazolidones, in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate, zinc fluoroborate and amine and ammonium salts of inorganic acids. The acidic catalyst which may be applied to the garment by padding, dipping or spraying may be applied as a solution in water or isopropyl alcohol may be citric, lactic, tartaric or glycolic acid alone or in admixture with magnesium or zinc chloride or nitrate or calcium or aluminium chloride. The garment may be pressed at 220‹-270‹F for from 30 seconds to 10 minutes or may be pressed to impart shape to the folds and then cured in an oven maintained at 200‹-450‹F for from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. The acidic catalyst on the garment may then be neutralized. The method is of particular utility in cuffing or recuffing permanently set trousers. Garments made from cotton, viscose rayon or linen alone or in admixture with wool, nylon, polyester, acrylic or polyolefin fibres may be treated.
