Abstract

The invention comprises cellulose acetate containing fabrics which are coated with hydroxyethylcellulose and a process for producing such fabrics. The cellulose acetate fabric is treated with an alkaline solution of hydroxyethylcellulose, preferably containing an amphoteric detergent, thereafter coagulating and regenerating hydroxyethylcellulose using neutral, alkaline or acidic reagents yielding an insoluble film of hydroxyethylcellulose on the fabric. The solution used preferably contains 2-8% hydroxyethylcellulose, 5-9% of alkali metal hydroxide, 0.1-1% of amphoteric detergent and the remainder is water. The solution is applied to the fabric by spraying or padding and 10-100% on weight of fabric is used. The regeneration may be preceded by a steaming process at 200-250 DEG F., which gives better penetration. Many regenerants are specified a plurality of which may be used together, the process includes various washing steps and is finished by drying the coated fabric at neutral pH values on a tenter, loop dryer or drying cylinders.ALSO:The invention comprises a process for improving the dye affinity of yarns and fabrics containing a proportion of cellulose di-or tri-acetate. The cellulose acetate containing material is treated with an aqueous alkaline solution of hydroxyethylcellulose after which the hydroxyethylcellulose is converted into a water-insoluble film bonded to the material by regeneration and coagulation using neutral, acidic or alkaline precipitants. The film of water-insoluble hydroxyethylcellulose produced in the materials treated supplies a source of hydroxyl groups with which reactive dyes especially are able to react, other dyes applied by conventional techniques are vat, azoic, naphthol, chrome, direct and sulphur dyes. In the preferred process the alkalene hydroxyethylcellulose solution also contains an amount of an amphoteric detergent. Heat alone may be used as a regenerant, the process for precipitating the film on the fabric or material involves various washing processes.
