Abstract

Textile materials are coloured, locally or otherwise, and given a crease- or shrink-resistant finish or a modified handle by treating them with an aqueous medium containing a resin forming composition known to produce a crease-resistant or shrink-resistant finish or a modified handle, an acid catalyst and a dyestuff containing a reactive halogen atom or other group capable of reacting with the resin or fibre to become attached thereto through a covalent bond, optionally drying the treated material and finally baking, e.g., at 130 DEG -170 DEG C. Specified resin forming compositions are epoxy resins, polyisocyanates, modified glycol acetals and the condensation products of formaldehyde with cresols, acrolein, urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, dicyandiamidine, biguanides, amides, carbamates, allophanates, aminotriazines, urons, ureides, ureins, imidazolidones, triazones, hydantoins, and polyamides and lower alkyl ethers of such condensation products. Specified acid catalysts are zinc chloride, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, mineral acid salts of organic amines, weak acids such as oxalic acid and acidliberators such as magnesium chloride and ammonium thiocyanate. Specified reactive dyestuffs are of the nitro, azo, anthraquinone, and phthalocyanine series and specified reactive groups are triazinyl groups substituted by chlorine or bromine atoms or by sulphonic acid, hydroxyl, unsubstituted amino, guanyl hydrazide, semicarbazide or thiosemicarbazide groups, halogen substituted pyrimidinyl groups, b -halogenopropionyl-, b -halogenoethylsulphonyl-, b -halogenoethylsulphamyl-, b -sulphatoethylsulphonyl-, b -hydroxyethylsulphonyl-, chloroacetylamino-, b -(chloromethyl) -b - sulphatoethylsulphamyl-, alkyl phospite- and sulphon fluoridegroups. Suitable dyestuffs are those described in Specifications 209,723, 298,494, 460,224, 733,471, 740,533, 751,997, 775,308, 772,030, 774,925, 780,591, 781,930, 785,120, 785,222, 802,198, and 805,562. The aqueous solution may be applied by padding and printing methods and may contain the usual adjuvants such as polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose ethers, starches, starch ethers, casein, gelatine, alginates and water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions. The process is applicable to textiles of wool, silk, regenerated protein, polyamides, polyesters, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose di- and tri-acetate, cotton, linen and regenerated cellulose. Numerous examples are given.
