Abstract
Fibrous sheet materials are printed with a coloured or effect material using an oil-in-water emulsion containing as the aqueous phase a solution of an alkali caseinate containing formaldehyde and as the oil phase a liquid of medium boiling point, i.e. not appreciably below 100 DEG C. or above 250 DEG C., which is immiscible with water, and the materials are then dried, treated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, a metal compound having a tanning action and, if desired, an acid, and again dried. The invention includes the uniform application of the emulsion by the pad printing method. Suitable emulsions are those described in Specification 544,157. In examples: (1) lustrous viscose fabric is printed with the paste obtained as in example (1) of Specification 544,157, dried, treated with a solution of potash, alum and formaldehyde, and dried at 60 DEG C. to give a matt effect; (2) cotton is printed with the paste obtained by example (2) of Specification 544,157, dried, passed through a solution of potash alum and formaldehyde, and dried on a steam-heated cylinder; (3) crepe viscose fabric is printed with the paste of example (3) of Specification 544,157, dried and finished as in (1) or (2); (4) staple fibres are printed with the paste of example (4), (6) or (7) of Specification 544,157, dried and finished as in (2); (5) cotton is printed with the paste of example (5) of Specification 544,157, dried and finished as in (1) or (2); and (6), calfskin is printed with the paste of example (5) of Specification 544,157, dried, sprayed with a solution containing potash alum, acetic acid and formaldehyde, and dried at 40 DEG C.
