Abstract

Casein and aluminium formate are mixed and dissolved by heating with water. The solution on cooling sets to a gel, or it may be evaporated to dryness to produce the complex in the form of flakes. The product in the form of a 1--3 per cent aqueous solution is used for waterproofing cellulose or protein fibres or fabrics such as paper, cotton, wool or silk. The material may be treated in a bath of the solution of 60 DEG C. for ten minutes to an hour, and after drawing, dried at 60 DEG C. When it is desired that the fabric should be soft and pliable, it may be treated with a soap solution after or preferably before the waterproofing treatment, and if the material is to be sized, the sizing should preferably follow the waterproofing. If the waterproofing solution is to be kept, a small quantity of borax may be added as a preservative.
