Abstract

A grease composition, suitable for lubrication under humid atmospheric conditions, comprises a major proportion of a water-immiscible lubricating oil thickened to grease consistency with a mixture of a substantially water-insoluble soap and a water water-soluble soap, the latter soap constituting not more than 25 per cent by weight of the soap mixture, and a minor proportion of a water-soluble corrosion inhibitor of a specified type. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil, a synthetic hydrocarbon oil, an oxygenated oil or mixtures of hydrocarbon oil and oxygenated oil. Examples of oxygenated oils are polyalkylene glycols and their partial or complete ethers and esters, polyalkyl silicone polymers, and esters such as 2-ethylhexyl sebacate, dioctyl phthalate and triethylhexyl phosphate. Fatty oils such as lard oil or castor oil may be added to the lubricating oil. The substantially water-insoluble soap may be an alkaline earth metal, zinc, lead, cobalt, aluminium or other polyvalent metal or lithium soap of fatty acids, resin acids or naphthenic acids, while the water-soluble soap may be a sodium, potassium, amine or alkanolamine soap of such acids. The water-soluble corrosion inhibitors used are alkali metal, amine, or quaternary ammonium nitrites, chromates, molybdates, tungstates, rodates, phosphates, borates, salicylates, citrates, oxalates, tartrates, phthalates, acetates, benzoates, sulphites, tannates or lactates. In addition to the ordinary alkali metal chromates, the dichromates may be employed as well. Moreover, the borates may be the meta-or tetra-borate and the phosphates may comprise ortho-, meta-, pyro- and poly-phosphates. The grease composition may also contain metal-containing detergents such as metal salts of sulphonic acids, phenol-aldehyde condensation products, naphthenic acids, cyclo-aliphatic carboxylic acids or rosin acids, particularly lead naphthenate or sodium or calcium petroleum-sulphonate. In the examples, grease compositions are described consisting of mineral lubricating oil and (a) sodium and lithium (or calcium) soaps of hydrogenated castor oil and sodium nitrite, (b) barium 12-hydroxy stearate, sodium stearate and dicylclohexyl ammonium nitrite, (c) aluminium stearate, sodium 12-hydroxy stearate and sodium chromate or (d) sodium and lead stearates and potassium iodate. Methods of preparing the grease compositions are described.
