Abstract

Substantially anhydrous sodium soap lubricating greases, said to be mechanically stable, contain 0.01-1 per cent, and preferably 0.1-0.3 per cent, by weight of a polyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. over 200 or of an ester or an ether, especially a mono-ester or a mono-ether, of a polyalkylene glycol having a mol. wt. over 150. The sodium soap content of the grease may be about 1-50, and preferably 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 or 10, per cent by weight, and the alkylene group of the glycol compound may contain 2-6 carbon atoms. The polyalkylene glycol may be a mixture of several polymers and the molecular weight in this case refers to the mean molecular weight of the mixture. The glycols used may be the polyethylene glycols, the polypropylene glycols, the polybutylene glycols, the polyamylene glycols, or the polyhexylene glycols. Alternatively the mono-esters of these glycols, e.g. the fatty acid mono-esters, such as polyethylene glycol mono-stearate, may be used as well as the aromatic ethers of the glycols. In an example, 200 grams of stearic acid, 35 grams of hydrogenated castor oil, 10 grams of polyethylene glycol (1500 mol. wt.), 25 grams of sodium hydroxide and 5700 grams of naphthenic mineral lubricating oil are mixed together at about 360 DEG F. until the fatty components are completely saponified and all water of reaction substantially eliminated. The molten grease is then poured to a depth of 1/2 inch in a pan and rapidly cooled in a stream of cold air. Saturated fatty acids containing 14-32 carbon atoms in the molecule or unsaturated fatty acids containing 18-22 carbon atoms in the molecule may be used for preparing the sodium soap present in the grease, e.g. 12-hydroxy stearic acid, 10-dihydroxy stearic acid, 4-hydroxy palmitic acid, iso-stearic acid, iso-palmitic acid, ricinoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, palm oil fatty acids, cottonseed oil fatty acids, abietic acid and/or its glycerides and/or naphthenic acids. Metallic sodium may be used as a saponifying medium. Instead of the fatty acids, the glycerides or the lower monohydric alcohol or wax alcohol esters of these acids may be used in the manufacture of the grease. During the cooking of the sodium soap greases of the invention up to 2 per cent by weight of an aluminium and/or calcium soap may be added, and after cooking and cooling the greases may be mixed with any proportion, e.g. 1-70 per cent of aluminium and/or calcium soap greases. Specification 622,945 and U.S.A. Specification 2,445,935 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also anhydrous sodium soap greases containing from 0.01-1.0 per cent by weight of polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight in excess of 150. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
