Abstract

An extreme-pressure, detergent, anti-corrosive lubricating composition for use at high temperatures and for crankcase and gearbox lubrication comprises a major proportion of an oil base and a minor amount of each of three separate components; viz, an organic halogen compound, an organic sulphur compound, and a salt or ester of an organic sulphonic acid. The compounds should be oil-soluble or oil-miscible and have a vapour pressure less than atmospheric at 140 DEG C, preferably 170 DEG C. As halogen compound virtually any halogen compound having the desired vapour pressure may be used. As sulphur compound may be used organic sulphides or polysulphides of the same or different organic radicles whether aliphatic, aromatic, or mixed aliphatic-aromatic, mercaptans, thio phenols, thio esters, amides or anilides or thio urea, including reaction products of phosphorus pentasulphide or organic compounds, and including halogenated sulphur compounds. As sulphonic acid derivatives may be used sulphonic esters or salts such as the calcium salt of petroleum sulphonic acid. The proportions contemplated are up to 20 per cent, preferably 0.1 to 10 per cent of halogen and sulphur compound together, and up to 10 per cent, preferably 0.01 to 2 per cent, of the sulphonic salt or ester. The composition may be used as a grease if a thickening agent such as a soap is added.
