Abstract

A grease is prepared by mixing (1) an oil of lubricating viscosity, (2) 1-50 wt. per cent of a thickening agent which is a mixture of alkaline earth metal soaps (including complex soaps) or soap forming ingredients, and (3) 1-10 wt. per cent of an amino compound which is either the addition product of an amine and an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, or an ammonium salt of one of the following acids: sulphuric, phosphoric, aliphatic or aryl aliphatic mono-carboxylic, sulphated castor oil acid, or sulphonic acid (including phenyl, naphthyl, alkylphenyl, and alkyl naphthyl sulphonic acids), and heating the resulting mixture for a time and to a temperature sufficient to form the soap thickening agent (if it is not added as a preformed soap) and to thicken the oil to the extent desired. During the heating the amino compound decomposes, liberating NH3 and free acid in the case of an ammonium salt, and amine and free acid in the case of the addition product. The amine, e.g. aniline or morpholine, usually remains in the grease. The free acid may also be left in the finished grease but is more usually neutralized with an excess of base, e.g. lime. the lubricating oil base may be mineral oil or a synthetic oil, e.g. polymerized olefins, fluorocarbons, perfluoroalkyl ethers, esters of phosphorus-containing acids, amines, silicone oils, polyglycol esters and other esters of the usual types, particularly trimethylolpropane tricaprylate. The greases may also contain the usual types of additives, e.g. phenyl, a -naphthylamine, 2,6-ditert.-butyl-4-methyl phenol, free fats and fatty acids, esters of alkyl and/or aryl acids, sulphurized fats and lead soaps. Those greases which are formed by using as compound (3) an ammonium salt of an alkyl substituted naphthyl sulphonic acid, and after heating and neutralization with excess alkaline earth metal base, e.g. lime, then contain the alkaline earth metal salt of such an acid are stated to be novel per se, examples being given.ALSO:A grease is prepared by mixing (1) a silicone lubricating oil, (2) 1-50 wt. per cent of a thickening agent which is a mixture of alkaline earth metal soaps (including complex soaps) or soap-forming ingredients, and (3) 1-10 wt. per cent of an amino compound which is either the addition product of an amine and an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, or an ammonium salt of one of the following acids:-sulphuric, phosphoric, aliphatic or aryl-aliphatic monocarboxylic, sulphated castor oil acid, or sulphonic acid (including phenyl, naphthyl, alkylphenyl and alkylnaphthyl sulphonic acids), and heating the resulting mixture till thickening occurs. During the heating the amino compound decomposes forming ammonia or amine and free acid. The amine, e.g. n-propylamine, aniline or morpholine, usually remains in the finished grease. The free acid may remain as such or may be neutralized with excess alkaline earth metal base, e.g. lime. Example III describes such a preparation. Those greases formed using an ammonium alkyl-naphthyl sulphonate as compound (3) which after heating and neutralizing is connected to an alkaline earth metal salt are stated to be novel per se.
