Abstract

Lubricating oils are compounded with a small proportion of a metal salt of a 2,4-dialkylphenol sulphide having the general formula:- <FORM:0561801/IV/1> where R's are alkyl radicals, M is a metal and X its valency and n is one or two, the addition agent being a corrosion inhibitor and an antisludging agent. The metal is preferably tin, barium or zinc and the alkyl groups preferably all amyl groups. Other than compounds with these substituents, the only compound specified comprises barium 2-dodecyl-4-tert. amyl phenol monosulphide. The salts may be prepared by the action of the metal hydroxide or alcoholate on the phenol sulphide, the latter being obtained from the respective dialkyl phenol with sulphur dichloride in solution in a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride. The disulphide compounds may also be used; the salts may be in admixture. A concentration of 0.3 per cent by weight in the oil is specified. The oils may be paraffin, asphalt or naphthenic base or highly refined lubricating oils. Specification 547,972 is referred to.
