Abstract

548,390. Lubricating compositions. HELMORE, W. April 4, 1941, No. 4551. [Class 91] An extreme pressure lubricating composition of the type containing an organic phosphite and an organic phosphate is improved against its corrosive effect and also for use at high temperatures by the addition thereto of a small proportion of an oil-soluble organic tin compound. The trivalent phosphorus compound may be an aryl or alkyl phosphite, a mixed phosphite or a long chain compound in which a phosphite radical occurs more than once in the molecule ; tributyl phosphite and triamyl phosphite are specified. The phosphate may be an aryl or alkyl phosphate, or a mixed phosphate; tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, and trinaphthyl phosphate are specified. The organic tin compound may be a soap or other organic tin compound; tin oleate and tin phenyl are specified. The addition agents are added in total amounts of up to 10 per cent. by weight of the oil base and preferably about 1 to 2 per cent., the individual proportions being variable. In an example, a solvent refined paraffinic lubricating oil base is compounded with a mixture comprising tricresyl phosphate, 0.5 per cent.: tributyl phosphite, 0.10 per cent.; and tin oleate, 0.10 per cent. The Provisional Specification includes also the addition of a corresponding thiophosphite or thiophosphate instead of the phosphite or phosphate, and includes compositions in which either an organic phosphite or phosphate may be used.
