Abstract

Lubricant compositions comprise a major proportion of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil and up to 5 wt. per cent of an alkyl diaryl phosphorothionate of formula <FORM:1070314/C4-C5/1> where R1 is hydrogen, a C1-C14 alkyl grou or a phenyl radical and each R is a phenyl or tolyl radical. Phosphorothionates specified are methyl diphenyl, ethyl diphenyl, propyl diphenyl, butyl diphenyl, ethyl hexyl diphenyl, n- and iso-decyl diphenyl, n-lauryl diphenyl, benzyl diphenyl and the corresponding alkyl phenyl-tolyl phosphorothionates. The composition may also include copolymers of alkyl methacrylates and vinyl pyrrolidone and bis-(2:6-ditert.-butyl-4-hydroxyl phenyl) methane.ALSO:Methyl, ethyl, butyl and benzyl diphenyl phosphorothionates are prepared by heating diphenyl phosphorochloridothionate with the corresponding sodium alkoxide. Ethylhexyl, n-decyl, iso-decyl, n-lauryl and tri-decyl diphenyl phosphorothionals are prepared by heating the corresponding alkyl diphenyl phosphite with sulphur.
