Abstract

1351651 Polyphenyl thioether functional fluids MANSANTO CO 24 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 44642/71 Heading C5F A lubricant or hydraulic fluid comprises a major amount (e.g. at least 60 wt. per cent) of a polyphenyl thioether or mixed polyphenyl ether-thioether base stock and 0À01-0À2 wt. per cent of trichloroacetic acid. The base stock may be one or more compounds of formula R-Y(R<SP>1</SP>-Y) n -R where R is phenyl, xenyl, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or haloalkyl (F, Q or Br), halophenyl or C 1 -C 4 alkoxyphenyl; R<SP>1</SP> is phenylene, phenyl-phenylene, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or haloalkyl phenylene, C 1 -C 4 alkoxyphenylene or halophenylene; n = 1 to 6; and each Y is O or S, at least one Y being S. Many such compounds are listed, most having 3 to 8 benzene rings. The composition may also contain 0À01-10 wt. per cent of a dialkyl hydrogen phosphite together with conventional additives.
