1352828 Hydraulic fluids MONSANTO CO 24 Sept 1971 [28 Dee 1970] 50751/73 Divided out of 1351651 Heading C5F An hydraulic fluid comprises a major amount of polyphenyl thioether or mixed polyphenyl ether-thioether base stock and 0À01-2À0 wt. per cent of phosphinic acid of formula where R<SP>11</SP> is a C 6 -C 16 aryl, alkaryl or haloaryl group, or a C 1 -C 12 alkyl or haloalkyl group. The base stock may be one or more compounds of formula R-Y(R<SP>1</SP>-Y) n -R where R is phenyl, C 1 -C 4 alkyl- or haloalkyl-substituted phenyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy-substituted phenyl, bromo-, chloro- or fluoro-phenyl, or xenyl; R<SP>1</SP> is phenylene, C 1 -C 4 alkyl-, haloalkyl- or alkoxy-substituted phenylene, bromo-, chloro- or fluorophenylene, or phenyl-phenylene; n = 1-6, and each Y is O or S, at least one Y being S. Many such compounds are listed. The composition may also contain 0À01-10 wt. per cent of a dialkyl hydrogen phosphite, together with conventional additives.
