Abstract

A lubricating composition substantially free from lubricating oil base hydrocarbons comprises a homogenous blend of an ester of formula <FORM:0763967/III/1> where X is oxygen or sulphur, R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 4 carbon atoms and which may contain chlorine, bromine or fluorine atoms or an hydroxyl, or amino group, R2 is an aryl hydrocarbon group which may contain chlorine, bromine or fluorine atoms, alkyl groups of 1-8 carbons atoms, or alkoxy groups, and R3 is the same as R1 or R2, with a thickening agent which is (a) silica aerogel, (b) an ammonium or phosphonium salt of bentonite wherein the pentavalent nitrogen or phosphorus atom carries at least one alkyl group containing at least 10 carbon atoms or (c) a sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium or aluminium soap of a fatty acid containing 14-20 carbon atoms. Examples of R1 and R2 groups are given and particular esters referred to are 2 - ethylbutyl diphenyl, 2 - methylpentyl dicresyl, n - hexyl phenyl cresyl, butyl diphenyl, butyl 2 - ethylhexyl phenyl, tridecyl di (methoxyphenyl) 2 - ethylhexyl diphenyl, 2 - ethylhexyl dicresyl, 2 - butyloctyl phenyl cresyl n - octyl phenyl cresyl, b - methylheptyl diphenyl, tri(methyl)hexyl diphenyl, octadecyl diphenyl, 3 - propylheptyl dicresyl C24 -alkyl dicresyl, 2 - butyloctyl diphenyl, lauryl dinaphthyl, lauryl dicresyl and 2 - ethylbutyl di(chlorocresol) phosphates; 2 - ethylhexyl diphenyl, 2 - ethylbutyl dicresyl, lauryl dicresyl, 6 - methylheptyl diphenyl, 2 - methylpentyl phenylcresyl, and 2 - butyloctyl cresyl chlorophenyl thiophosphates; butoxyethyl diphenyl, 2 - ethylhexoxyethyl dicresyl, 2 - ethylbutoxyethyl phenyl cresyl, butoxyethyl dinaphthyl and 2 - ethylbutoxy - ethyl phenyl chlorophenyl phosphates and the corresponding thiophosphates; dibutyl phenyl, di (2 - ethylhexyl) phenyl, di-isooctyl phenyl, butyl octyl phenyl 2 - ethylhexyl butyl phenyl, dibutyl cresyl, 2 - butyloctyl butyl cresyl, di(6 - methylheptyl) cresyl, di (2 - ethylbutyl) cresyl, butyl n - octyl cresyl and lauryl n - octyl cresyl phosphates and the corresponding thiophosphates. The silica aerogel may have a particle size of less than 5 microns. The bentonite salt may have 1-3 additional aromatic or aliphatic groups attached to the pentavalent nitrogen or phosphorus atom; a list of radicals with which the nitrogen or phosphorus atom may be substituted is given and particular compounds referred to are the decyl phosphonium, decyl-ammonium, lauryl ammonium, octadecyl ammonium, dimethyl dicetyl ammonium, lauryl triphenyl phosphonium, cetyl octyl ammonium, cetyl phosphonium, octadecyl hexadecyl ammonium, tetralauryl phosphonium, decyl octyl phosphonium, dimethyl didecyl phosphonium, lauryl naphthyl ammonium, decyl tricresyl ammonium, di - isopropyl cetyl ammonium, dimethyl octyl decyl ammonium and tetraoctadecenyl ammonium salts of bentonite. Fatty acid soaps referred to are those of stearic, oleic, palmitic and linoleic acids. A mixture of thickening agents may be used. The composition may contain 5-50 per cent of the thickening agent and 50-95 per cent of the ester. The composition may contain other organic lubricants, e.g. aryl esters of alkylsulphonic acids in which the alkyl group has at least 8 carbon atoms, triaryl phosphates, trialkyl phophates containing at least 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups, diesters of dicarboxylic acids, chlorinated hydrocarbons, organo - silicon polymers, silicate esters and alkyl ethers of mono- or polyglycols; examples of these lubricants are given. Other optional ingredients are antifoaming agents such as dimethyl siloxane polymers, corrosion inhibitors, antirusting agents, detergents, E.P. additives, anti-oxidants, flame-snuffers, and U.I. improving agents such as polyalkyl methacrylates, e.g. polyoctyl methacrylates, and polyolefins, e.g. alkylated polystyrenes.
