Abstract

1353976 Amine salts of dithiophosphoric acid esters ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 25 May 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 40315/71 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] Amine salts of the general formula where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrocarbyl which may contain up to 10% by weight of polar groups, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are alkyl groups totalling not more than 7 carbon atoms, and X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP> are O or S are made by reacting a thiophosphoric acid with an amine at ambient temperature over a period of time, e.g. about 30 mins. the p thiophosphoric acid can be made in situ by reacting P 2 S 5 with an alcohol or thiol, preferably by staged addition of P 2 S 5 to the thiol or alcohol. Specified amine salts are the sec-butylamine salts of isobutyl-, n-butyl, sec-butyl, n-decyl-, iso-decyl and di-(2-methyl pent-4-yl) dithiophosphoric acid. The compounds are used as lubricating oil additives.
