Abstract

Surfaces of aluminium, or an alloy thereof, are lubricated by applying to the surface a lubricant which comprises or consists of one or more esters of the general formula <FORM:1041721/C4-C5/1> (where all the X atoms are the same and are either oxygen or sulphur, R is an alkyl group having at least 8 carbon atoms, and R1 and R11 are each alkyl or aryl groups) and, optionally, a mineral oil. Typical of many specified esters are trilauryl trithiophosphite and tridecyl phosphite. The proportion of mineral oil may be 80-97% by weight of the total mixture, and those compositions comprising 85-94% of mineral oil are claimed per se. The lubricant may contain 10-50% of an alkali metal soap, e.g. lithium stearate; 0.2-2% of an antioxidant, e.g. diphenylamine, p,p1 - dimethyl-diphenylamine, phenothiazine, and 2,6-ditertiary butyl phenol; and an anti-foaming agent, e.g. a silicone fluid.
