Abstract
571,976. Metal-cleaning compositions. AMERICAN CHEMICAL PAINT CO. June 30, 1943, No. 10602. Convention date, March 18. [Class 91] A metal-cleaning composition comprises phosphoric acid and a water-soluble, non-ionic emulsifying agent having the formula R.O (C2H4O)n R, in which R stands for an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or acyl radicle containing at least 10 carbon atoms, R, stands for an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkyl-aryl or acyl radicle or a hydrogen atom, and n is an integer greater than 2. The emulsifying agent may be a polyglycol ester in which one or both of the hydroxy groups of the polyglycol are esterified with a fatty acid of at least 10 carbon atoms or it may be a polyglycol ether in which one of the hydroxy groups of the polyglycol is etherified with a phenol containing a tertiary alkyl substituent group of at least 8 carbon atoms. The composition may be diluted with water and waterimmiscible solvents for grease such as toluene, petroleum fractions, hydrogenated petroleum fractions, high-flash coal tar naphtha, decahydro-naphthalene, pine oil, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene or tetrachloroethane. Other optional ingredients of the composition are water-miscible solvents for grease, inhibitors of acid attack on metal, thickening agents and oil. Metal-cleaning compositions mentioned in examples are a) a mixture of 75 per cent. phosphoric acid, water and an emulsifying agent of the general formula given above wherein R stands for an iso-octylphenyl radicle, R, stands for a hydrogen atom and n has an average value of 20 and b) an emulsion of 75 per cent. phosphoric acid, the emulsifying agent of a), water and a petroleum fraction boiling between 300 and 400C. U.S.A. Specification 1,897,813 is referred to.
