Abstract

Zinc, zinc alloy or ferrous surfaces are degreased and phosphate coatings are simultaneously formed thereon by means of an emulsion, preferably applied by spraying, of a grease-removing solvent in an acidic solution of at least one phosphate of sodium, ammonium or potassium. The solvent, which may be present in a proportion of 1-10 per cent. of the solution, may be an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon boiling between 130 DEG and 300 DEG C., tetrahydronaphthalene, methylcyclohexanone, ethyl benzoate or orthodichlorbenzene. Phosphating accelerators such as sodium chlorate, anionic emulsifiers such as petroleum sulphonates and long-chain alcohol sulphates, and non-ionogenic emulsifiers such as derivatives of ethylene oxide polymers may be present.ALSO:Zinc, zinc alloy or ferrous surfaces are degreased and phosphate coatings are simultaneously formed thereon by means of an emulsion of a grease-removing solvent in an acidic solution of at least one phosphate of sodium, ammonium or potassium. The solvent which may be present in a proportion of 1-10 per cent. of the solution, may be an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon boiling between 130 DEG and 300 DEG C., tetrahydronaphthalene, methylcyclohexanone, ethyl benzoate or orthodichlorbenzene. Phosphating accelerators such as sodium chlorate, anionic emulsifiers such as petroleum sulphonates and long-chain alcohol sulphates and non-ionogenic emulsifiers such as derivatives of ethylene oxide polymers may be present. The coatings may be rinsed with a dilute solution of chromic, phosphoric or oxalic acid or of ferrous sulphate, ferric nitrate, chromium sulphate or nitrate or aluminium sulphate or nitrate or mixtures thereof. Specification 517,049 is referred to.
