Abstract

A water-displacing composition which, when applied to metal surfaces before cold-rolling, inhibits corrosion and provides a lubricating film over the metal surfaces, comprises a mineral lubricating oil and not more than about 15 per cent by weight of a mixture of ammonium or alkali metal naphthasulphonate, blown rape oil and methyl cyclohexanol or other alcohol having roughly equivalent or greater effect in reducing interfacial tension between a mineral lubricating oil and water. The mineral lubricating oil employed is one derived from petroleum and boiling at temperatures between the boiling points of the gas-oil fraction, i.e. the fraction having a final boiling point of about 400 DEG C., and those of the heavy residues such as asphaltic bitumen. Other alcohols which may be employed are ethyl and butyl alcohol and diacetone alcohol. The composition may also contain glyceryl mono-oleate, oleic acid or rape oil. In an example a composition is described consisting of mineral lubricating oil, sodium naphthasulphonate, blown rape oil, methyl cyclohexanol and oleic acid.
