Abstract

A bearing comprises a layer of aluminium alloy having bonded thereto a bearing layer consisting of an alloy containing at least 90 per cent lead. The bearing layer may be of a lead-tin alloy in which the tin content may be between 1 and 10 per cent. Alternatively, a lead-indium alloy may be employed in which the lead is at least 93 per cent of the alloy. The bearing layer may be of a thickness not exceeding 0.0010 inch. The aluminium layer may be bonded to a steel backing member, and it may contain between 0.50 and 5 per cent cadmium and between 2 and 10 per cent silicon. A method of electroplating the bearing layer onto the aluminium is described (see Group XXXVI). The aluminium alloy is first degreased in a standard cleaner, such as hot tri-sodium phosphate, for ten to fifteen seconds and then washed in running water. The aluminium surface is then etched at a temperature between 180 DEG and 200 DEG F for about thirty seconds in a solution of tri-sodium phosphate and sodium hydroxide containing about .40 to .45 lb. of the mixture per gallon of water and then washed in cold water. The electroplating is then carried out.
