Abstract

Substances of the general formula <FORM:0679192/IV (b)/1> where R represents a methyl or ethyl group and R1 represents a tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl group, are suitable for use as antioxidants in fats and fatty oils (see Groups I and III). They may be prepared by reacting p-hydroxyanisole or p-hydroxyphenetole with tert.-butyl or tert.-amyl alcohol at a temperature of 80-90 DEG C. in the presence of orthophosphoric acid as alkylating catalyst. Alternatively, they may be prepared by reacting p-hydroxyanisole or p-hydroxyphenetole with isobutylene or isoamylene in the presence of sulphuric acid. Specification 621,519 is referred to.ALSO:Fats and fatty oils are stabilized against oxidation by incorporating therein a propylene glycol solution of one or more compounds chosen from the group consisting of hydroquinone and those compounds represented by the general formula <FORM:0679192/III/1> where R represents a methyl or ethyl group and R1 represents a tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl group. Synergizing acids such as one or more of citric, orthophosphoric, metaphosphoric, tartaric or ascorbic acid may also be added. Fats and fatty oils mentioned are lard, peanut oil, palm oil, coconut oil, cottonseed oil, soya bean oil, sunflowerseed oil, sesame oil and fat-fatty oil mixtures. In an example, a composition consisting of propylene glycol, tertiary-butylated hydroxyanisole (a mixture of 3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-anisole and 2-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-anisole), hydroquinone and citric acid is added to lard, or other fat or fatty oil. Specification 621,519 is referred to.ALSO:Fats and fatty oils are stabilized against oxidation by incorporating therein a propylene glycol solution of one or more compounds chosen from the group consisting of hydroquinone and those compounds represented by the general formula <FORM:0679192/I/1> where R represents a methyl or ethyl group and R1 represents a tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl group. Synergising acids such as one or more of citric, orthophosphoric, metaphosphoric, tartaric or ascorbic acid may also be added. Fats and fatty oils mentioned are lard, peanut oil, palm oil, coconut oil, cottonseed oil, soya bean oil, sunflowerseed oil, sesame oil, shortenings especially those of the dry plastic type, and fat-fatty oil mixtures. In an example, a composition consisting of propylene glycol, tertiary-butylated hydroxyanisole (a mixture of 3-tert. butyl-4-hydroxy-anisole and 2-tert. butyl-4-hydroxy-anisole), hydroquinone and citric acid is added to lard or other fat of fatty oil.
