Abstract

A composition suitable for use as a hydraulic liquid or lubricant comprises a mixture of one or more saturated aliphatic alcohols having up to 6 carbon atoms and/or glycol monoalkyl ethers derived from aliphatic saturated alcohols having up to 4 carbon atoms, a polyvinyl alkyl ether which may be hydrogenated, containing not more than 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, e.g. methyl, and present in an amount between one-third and one-sixth of the whole mixture and optionally a corrosion-preventing agent such as triethanolamine, or sodium or potassium phenyl glycine. The alcohol may be ethanol or diacetone alcohol and the ether, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol propyl ether or diethylene glycol butyl ether. The hydrogenated ethers are prepared by hydrogenating the polyvinyl alkyl ethers in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. Raney nickel, at elevated temperature, e.g. 150 to 250 DEG C., and superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 250 atmospheres.
