Abstract

A gasoline composition contains a monohydroxy derivative of a heterocyclic compound having one or two oxygen atoms cyclically combined with carbon atoms. The heterocyclic compound may be ethylene oxide, trimethylene oxide, 1,3-dioxolan, 1,4-dioxane, 1,3-dioxane, furane, tetrahydrofurane or pentamethylene oxide. Suitable derivatives are 4-hydroxymethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxymethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 2,2 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxymethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 2 - methyl - 2-ethyl - 4 - hydroxymethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 4-hydroxyethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 2 - methyl - 4-hydroxyethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 2,2 - dimethyl-4 - hydroxyethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 2 - methyl - 2-ethyl - 4 - hydroxyethyl - 1,3 - dioxolan, 5 - hydroxy - 2 - methyl - 1,3 - dioxane, 5 - hydroxymethyl - 5 - ethyl - 1,3 - dioxane, 3 - ethyl - 3-methylol-trimethylene oxide, and glycide. The compositions contain 0.01 to 2 per cent by weight of the derivative. They may also contain a polyglycol ether. In examples gasoline compositions contain 2,2-dimethyl-4-hydroxyethyl-1,3-dioxolan and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether.
