Abstract

A fuel composition for use in jet aircraft engines comprises a jet fuel comprising hydrocarbons boiling in the range from about 100 DEG F. to 600 DEG F. and 0.01-1.0 per cent. by weight, based on the jet fuel, of tetra-, penta- or hexa-ethylene glycol. The presence of the glycol ensures that at low temperatures there is no separation of ice crystals from the composition when the jet fuel contains dissolved or entrained water, and consequently that there is no choking of filters through which the composition passes on its way to the combustion zone of the engine. Tests are described in which the effect on the filter-plugging tendency of a water-saturated jet fuel caused by the addition of glycols of formula HO(C2H4O(nH, wher n is 1-9, is determined. The jet fuel employed in these tests is one meeting the JP-4 specification of the U.S.A. military authorities.
