Abstract

Fuel for Diesel engines consists of heavy fuel oil and a small percentage of an alkyl nitrate having 2-4 carbon atoms. The nitrate may be added alone or as a solution, e.g. in fuel oil, turpentine, petrol, alcohol, acetone, or ether, and may be injected into the cylinder in advance of the fuel oil, e.g. with the intake air, continuously or intermittently. In an example, creosote oil mixtures or heavy oils from the hydrogenation of coal with an addition of 2,5 per cent of ethyl nitrate are used. Specifications 294,129, [Class 91, Oils &c.], and 354,398 are referred to.
