Abstract

294,129. Sims, C. J. April 14, 1927. Motor spirit.-Fuel oils intended for use in compression-ignition engines have added to them a small proportion of a primer which will explode on rapid heating at a temperature below the ignition temperature of the untreated oil. The primer may have the property of liberating oxygen to assist the combustion of the oil. The primer must be soluble in the oil or capable of being added as a colloidal solution or stable suspensoid. Substances suitable for use include nitrocompound s such as trinitro-resorcinol, nitrous and nitric esters such as methyl nitrate or amyl nitrite, azo compounds such as diazoaminomethane, haloid compounds such as iodoform, chlorates and perchlorates such as hydrazine diperchlorate, acetylenic compounds such as copper acetylide, superoxides such as benzine ozonide, nitroamines such as picramide, organic mercury compounds such as mercury fulminate, phenyl nitramine and phenyl selenious acid. The quantity required is, e.g. in the case of methyl nitrate 5 per cent. by volume of methyl nitrate and 95 per cent of fuel oil. Specifications 10739/10, 131,869, 178,373 and 253,353 are referred to.
