Abstract

To permit of the use of lower compression pressures and temperatures and higher speeds of rotation in aero engines in which ignition is effected by compression, two or more primers including an igniting primer and an exploding primer are added to a non-volatile fuel oil such as shale oil. An igniting primer is one for which the temperature of spontaneous ignition in air is lower than for the fuel oil. One of the primers may have a higher spontaneous ignition temperature than the fuel oil. One or more of the primers may be added in solution e.g. as a solution in fuel oil, and the exploding primer may be dissolved in the igniting primer and the solution added to the fuel oil. Substances specified are, for the igniting primer ethyl nitrate, methyl nitrate, and for the exploding primer ethyl nitrate, organic peroxides such as benzoyl peroxide and amylene peroxide, picric acid, dinitrobenzene, trinitroglycerine, hexamethylene triperoxide-diamine, trinitrotoluene. Specific examples are methyl nitrate with ethyl nitrate; 1,4 to 7 per cent of ethyl nitrate and up to 2 per cent of an exploding primer, reckoned on the fuel oil; and 1 per cent of trinitrotoluene dissolved in 6,3 per cent of ethyl nitrate and added to the fuel oil.
