Abstract

Fuel for compression ignition engines is primed with (A) an alkyl nitrate having 2--4 atoms in the molecule to reduce the delay period, and (B) an organic bromine compound and/or an oxygenated organic copper compound to reduce the spontaneous ignition temperature, such bromine and copper compounds being non-explosive and having higher spontaneous ignition temperatures than the fuel oil. Primers specified are:--Type "A," ethyl, propyl, and butyl nitrate; up to 2 per cent may be used; Type "B," benzyl bromide, butyl bromide, isobutylene di-bromide, cyclohexyl bromide, and copper oleate, stearate, acetylacetonate, and propionylacetonate; 0.1 per cent of bromide or 0.5 of copper compound is suitable. For example, to a middle oil obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of coal there is added 0.5 per cent of ethyl nitrate and 0.1 or 0.5 per cent of any of the above bromides; or 0.5 per cent of ethyl nitrate, 0.1 per cent of copper oleate, and 0.1 of isobutylene dibromide. Specifications 294,129, [Class 91, Oils &c.], and 354,398 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specifications two or more primers are added to fuel oil, one primer selected to lower the ignition temperature, and the other to reduce the delay period.
