Abstract
Motor spirit is obtained by emulsifying an explosive such as nitroglycerine, nitro-guanidine, nitrocellulose, trinitrophenol or trinitrotoluene in vegetable oil, and dissolving the emulsion in an alcohol or other solvent or solvents which is or some of which are fuels. The explosive may first be dissolved in alcohol, acetone, acetic acid, or other solvent, the solution emulsified with the vegetable oil, and this solvent removed before solution of the emulsion in the fuel. Nitrobenzene, acetone, ether or other suitable substance may be added. Vegetable oils specified are castor, cottonseed, linseed, soya-bean, peanut, rice, grain, poppy, olive, hemp, colza, tomato seed, raisin seed, sesame and walnut oils. In an example, a solution of 100 kg. of nitro-guanidine in 300 kg. of commercially pure acetone is emulsified with 100 kg. of castor oil, and the acetone is removed by evaporation. 8 lb. of the resulting emulsion, 70 lb. of petrol, 10 lb. of ethyl alcohol, 10 lb. of acetone, and 2 lb. of ether are then mixed to form the fuel.
