Abstract

A gasoline composition comprises a minor proportion of a glycol ether of formula <FORM:0766591/III/1> where R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 ar hydrogen or alkyl groups containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, together with a minor proportion of an alcohol containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or an ester of a C1 to C10 alcohol and containing 2 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule, or an ether of formula R7-O-R8 where R7 and R8 are alkyl groups together containing a total of 2 to 20 carbon atoms. The gasoline preferably has a 50 per cent A.S.T.M. distillation point below 310 DEG F. The glycol ether may be ethylene glycol monoethyl ether or diethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Suitable alcohols include isopropyl, butyl, nonyl, hexyl and lauryl alcohols, and oxo alcohols; suitable esters include ethyl acetate and amyl acetate; suitable ethers include ethyl ether and dioscan. The ratios of the alcohol, ester or ether to the glycol ether in the composition may be between 20:1 and 0.1:1, and the amount of alcohol, ester or ether present may be between 0.01 and 2.5 per cent by volume. The composition may also include 0.1 to 2 per cent by weight of a solvent hydrocarbon having a Kauri-Butanol number above 15, and anti-oxidants and gum-inhibiting agents.
