Abstract

Additives for diesel fuels comprise nitric acid or nitrous acid esters of polyhydric alcohols in which at least one OH-group has been converted into an ether or acetal group. The additives may be the esters or monoalkyl ethers of glycols and polyglycols, such as ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycols, such as triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polypropylene glycols or glycerine. In the glycol and polyglycol alkyl ethers, the alkyl groups preferably contain not more than 6 carbon atoms, and in the glycerine monoalkyl ethers the alkyl groups preferably contain 4 to 8 carbon atoms. The esters are added in amounts of 0.1 to 2 per cent by volume of the oil. Specific esters mentioned are nitric acid and nitrous acid esters of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether and the nitrous acid ester of glycerine monoformal.
