Abstract

A hydraulic brake fluid contains a lubricant comprising a mixture of a glycol ricinoleate and a substantially water-insoluble polypropylene glycol. The glycol ricinoleate may be propylene or butylene mono-ricinoleate, while a suitable polypropylene glycol is one having an average molecular weight between 1000 and 3000. The brake fluid may also contain a diluent chosen from the propyl, butyl and amyl alcohols, methoxy-butanol and monoalkyl ethers of ethylene glycol or of diethylene glycol wherein the alkyl group contains no more than 4 carbon atoms. In addition, the brake fluid may contain one or more glycols chosen from propylene, butylene and hexylene glycols. Corrosion inhibitors such as potassium ricinoleate, borax, sodium nitrite, or diamylamine phosphate, and antioxidants such as diphenylol propane, hydroquinone or 2, 6 - di - tertiary - butyl 4 - methyl phenol may also be present in the brake fluids. Examples of suitable brake fluid compositions are given.
